See what it's worth

The SmartXide Punto is a DEKA carbon dioxide laser emitting at 10,600 nm from an RF excited CO2 source with DEKA's PSD, or Pulse Shape Design, technology. The FDA cleared the SmartXide family, covering the Touch and the Punto, under K180193 on February 21, 2018. That filing lists the Punto in 30 W and 50 W versions with its own external system and scanner covers, 0.2 and 0.4 mm handpiece spots and a 350 µm scanner spot. The scanner is cleared for ablative skin resurfacing.

DEKA's brochure lists four emission modes: SmartPulse, DEKAPulse, HighPulse and continuous wave. Two scanners are named, the HiScan DOT and the Hi Scar 3, with a maximum scan area of 15 by 15 mm and shapes that include dot, line, triangle, ellipse, hexagon, square and ring. Dwell time runs from 100 to 2,000 µs and DOT spacing from 0 to 2,000 µm in 50 µm steps, and SmartStack can stack one to five pulses on the same dot. The Punto also has a CoolPeel mode that combines HighPulse with randomized microspot placement.

Within the SmartXide range, the Touch is the closest relative. The same 2018 clearance lists the Touch at 60 W against the Punto's 30 or 50 W, and DEKA's Touch brochure pairs it with a HiScan DOT/RF scanner that adds radiofrequency to the CO2 beam. The Tetra PRO is a separate model with a Moveo emission mode. The Punto name and its power rating appear on the cabinet label.

A seller should state whether the unit is the 30 W or 50 W version and which scanners come with it, since a Hi Scar 3 is a separate accessory from the HiScan DOT. Buyers will ask about the condition of the seven mirror articulated arm, the sterilizable scanner spacers and the focusing handpieces. Have the service history and software version ready, and photograph the serial label, the touch screen and each scanner.
