Candela VelaShape III

VelaShape III is the third generation of Syneron's VelaShape body shaping line, now sold under the Candela name. It heats tissue with a combination Syneron called elos: bipolar radiofrequency, infrared light, and vacuum suction, with mechanical massage on one applicator. Syneron announced FDA clearance and a CE mark in September 2013 for temporary reduction of abdominal circumference. A later Syneron study protocol also lists temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite and in thigh circumference, along with relief of minor muscle aches.

Candela's specification sheet lists RF power up to 150 W, infrared LEDs up to 3.2 W at 850 nm, pulsed vacuum, a weight of 20 kg and a footprint of 38 x 49 x 132 cm. Two applicators connect to the console through an umbilical cable: VContour and VSmooth. VSmooth contains rotating elements that massage the tissue. A replaceable cover fits over the applicator before treatment so the skin does not touch it directly. FDA's GUDID database lists VelaShape III covers in a 10 x 13 mm small size and a 25 x 50 mm large flat size, both marked 4 Hr.

The earlier models look similar, so the generation matters. The original VelaShape was cleared under K071872. VelaShape II, CE marked since 2009, delivers 65 W of RF, while VelaShape III reaches 150 W and adds a built-in sensor that reads tissue surface temperature in real time.

Buyers will look first at whether both applicators are present and working. Check that vacuum pulls evenly on each, that the VSmooth rotating elements turn freely, and that cables and connectors show no cracking. Count any spare covers by size and say whether they are sealed. Add service records and the software version. Photograph the console label, the screen and both applicator heads.
