See what it's worth

The Vbeam Perfecta is a flashlamp-excited pulsed dye laser that emits a single 595 nm wavelength. Candela's own Vbeam timeline places it in 2006, after the Vbeam Classic of 2000 and ahead of the Vbeam Prima of 2018. Every Perfecta pulse is split into eight micropulses, and pulse durations run up to 40 ms. Its original FDA clearance is K050673; K230990, issued in June 2023, extended the 595 nm indications on both the Perfecta and the Prima to pediatric port wine stains and infantile and congenital hemangiomas.

The handpiece accepts snap-in distance gauges for 3 x 10, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 12 mm vascular spots, plus 7 mm and 10 mm compression gauges for benign pigmented lesions. Each gauge carries a microchip that reports the spot size to the console. Candela's specification sheet gives maximum fluence by spot, from 40 J/cm2 at 3 mm down to 7 J/cm2 at 12 mm. Cooling comes from the Dynamic Cooling Device, a cryogen spray built into the handpiece.

Spot size and wavelength separate a Perfecta from its successors. The Prima adds a 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength, a 15 mm spot, EverCool contact cooling, a zoom handpiece and a dye life meter, and Candela rates its maximum energy at 12 J against 8 J for the Perfecta. If the largest gauge in your kit is 12 mm and the screen offers no 1064 nm mode, the unit is a Perfecta or an older Vbeam.

Because a Perfecta has no dye life meter, the service log is what a buyer relies on to judge laser health. Note when the dye was last replaced, when the system was last calibrated and serviced, and the pulse count shown on screen. List every distance gauge, including the compression gauges,. Photos of the serial label, the treatment screen and the cryogen canister area help a dealer assess the unit.
