Cynosure SmartLipo MPX

The Smartlipo MPX is Cynosure's second generation laser lipolysis workstation. A cannula carrying a laser fiber is inserted under the skin to deliver energy directly into fat. Cynosure launched the original single wavelength Smartlipo in 2006 and introduced the MPX in 2008 as a new platform with a second wavelength. FDA summaries describe it as an Nd:YAG laser, with one Nd:YAG crystal rod producing both 1064 nm and 1320 nm. The 285 pound console needs a 220 V, 20 A single phase supply. Cynosure's filings say it bought the Smartlipo MPX from the Italian laser maker El.En.

MultiPlex, Cynosure's patented sequencing, lets the MPX fire the two wavelengths separately or blended in one output, and the company's 2011 annual report gives a maximum of 46 watts. Clearances from January 2008, December 2008 and January 2009 cover the multiwavelength laser and the MPX with the SmartSense C and SmartSense T modules. Cynosure says SmartSense, ThermaGuide and ThermaView arrived in March 2009. ThermaGuide is a cannula that reads tissue temperature under the skin, and ThermaView is a thermal camera for the skin surface. The cleared use is surgical incision, excision, vaporization, ablation and coagulation of soft tissue, plus laser assisted lipolysis.

The successor, Smartlipo Triplex, added 1440 nm in late 2009 on the same platform. A console that offers 1440 nm is therefore a Triplex, while an MPX lists only 1064 nm and 1320 nm. Earlier single wavelength Smartlipo units emit 1064 nm only.

Cynosure describes Smartlipo fibers as consumables, and FDA's device database lists single use 600 micron and 1000 micron fibers with RFID in ten packs. A buyer will ask which fibers and cannulas come with the laser, including ThermaGuide cannulas in their 150 mm and 250 mm lengths, and whether the ThermaView camera is present. Have ready the service history, the software version and photos of the serial label and main screen.
