See what it's worth

The Lumenis ULTRApulse Alpha is a carbon dioxide laser for skin resurfacing and soft tissue surgery, and Lumenis presents it as the newest member of its UltraPulse CO2 family. The FDA cleared a modified ULTRApulse Alpha under K233301 on December 1, 2023. That clearance places it in the UltraPulse CO2 Laser Systems Family and lists indications in dermatology and plastic surgery, podiatry, gynecology, general and thoracic surgery, dental and oral surgery and genitourinary surgery. Laser skin resurfacing for wrinkles and acne scars is on the list.

Lumenis's 2023 Alpha brochure groups the accessories into scanners and handpieces. The DeepFX Microscanner, which uses a 0.12 mm spot, runs the DeepFX, DeepFX High and SCAAR FX modes, and Lumenis rates SCAAR FX at up to 4 mm of penetration in one pulse. The UltraScan CPG scanner, with a 1.3 mm spot, runs LiteFX, GentleFX, ActiveFX and MaxFX. The brochure also lists TrueSpot and PreciseFX accessories, a collimated 2.0 mm handpiece and IncisionFX handpieces focused at 0.2 mm and 1.0 mm for incisional work.

Many sellers simply say they have an UltraPulse, so the model name matters. Earlier family members cleared by the FDA include the UltraPulse SurgiTouch, UltraPulse Encore and UltraPulse DUO. DeepFX, ActiveFX and SCAAR FX are treatment modes, and modes from the same family appear on older consoles, so a mode list does not prove you have an Alpha. The name printed on the console and its label settles the question.

Before quoting, a buyer will ask which scanners and handpieces are included, since the DeepFX Microscanner and the CPG scanner each unlock their own modes. Expect questions about the articulated arm, the laser tube's service history, the software version and any error log. Photos of the serial label, the home screen, each scanner and the arm joints help a dealer confirm the configuration.
