Lumenis Quantum

The Lumenis Quantum is an intense pulsed light platform from the early 2000s, built in three versions: Quantum SR, Quantum HR and Quantum DL. FDA cleared all three in October 2002 under K020839, together with the related Vasculight SR, HR, VS, VX and DL models, as the Lumenis family of intense pulsed light and IPL/Nd:YAG laser systems. That clearance gives an IPL output of 515 to 1200 nm and a 1064 nm Nd:YAG output, and it adds a Real Time Chiller for cooling the epidermis.

The FDA summary describes a console with software and control electronics, a control and display panel, one or two attached handpieces with skin cooling built into some treatment heads, and a remote interlock that shuts off the output when the treatment room door opens. The IPL indications cover tattoos, benign pigmented lesions, benign vascular lesions such as port wine stains, telangiectasias, rosacea and leg veins, and hair removal in skin types I to V. The Nd:YAG indications cover leg telangiectasias and reticular veins of 0.1 to 4.0 mm.

In January 2005 FDA cleared a Q-switched Nd:YAG treatment head under K043173 as a handheld upgrade that installs on any Quantum HR, SR or DL. It holds its own laser head, optics and cooling circuit, and is cleared for dark tattoos and pigmented lesions, so a Quantum with that head is a different offer from a plain IPL unit. In November 2005 Lumenis announced a sale of 50 IPL Quantum systems to Corporacion Dermoestetica. In 2006 FDA cleared the Lumenis One family, which cited that IPL clearance as a predicate.

Tell buyers whether the system powers up, which treatment heads are present, and whether a Q-switched head or chiller is included. Note any leaks or repairs. Photos of the serial label, the screen and each treatment head label help a buyer decide whether the unit is a working system or a parts source.
