Lumenis ResurFX

ResurFX is the Lumenis name for a 1565 nm non-ablative fractional laser, an erbium glass fiber laser paired with a scanner. The FDA first cleared it on September 3, 2013, under K130028, as an add-on module for Lumenis mainframes such as the M22. The module holds the fiber laser, a scanner and its controller, a power supply, a cooling unit and the treatment handpiece, and it fires from either the handpiece trigger or a footswitch. It is cleared for skin resurfacing and soft tissue coagulation.

In 2017 Lumenis turned the module into a standalone ResurFX System, cleared in August under K170060. The standalone unit uses the same wavelength and the same two tips, SapphireCool and Precision, with an 18 mm treatment width. Energy runs up to 40 or 70 mJ per microbeam depending on the tip. A dual axis scanner can lay down line, square, rectangle, circle, donut, hexagon, vertical line and vertical rectangle patterns.

This history means a ResurFX can come to market in three forms: as a module installed in an M22, as a handpiece on a Stellar M22, or as a standalone console. A seller who has only the handpiece without the matching module or console has a part, not a working laser, so it helps to state the form plainly. FoLix, a newer Lumenis console, also uses a 1565 nm erbium glass fiber laser with a scanning handpiece, but it is cleared for the appearance of scalp hair and sold as a separate product.

For a standalone unit, a buyer will want the serial label, the software version and the service history, along with a list of the tips included. Check the SapphireCool tip for chips or scratches on the sapphire. If the ResurFX is part of an M22 or Stellar M22, describe it as part of that system and list it with the other handpieces. Photos of the handpiece label, the tip faces and the scan pattern menu help a dealer confirm what you have.
