Fotona StarWalker MaQX

The StarWalker MaQX is the top Q-switched model in Fotona's StarWalker family. A single flashlamp pumped Nd:YAG cavity produces 1064 nm light, and a frequency doubling KTP crystal converts that beam to 532 nm. FDA records list the StarWalker Laser System Family under K171227, decided on August 18, 2017, and Practical Dermatology reported the MaQX clearance in late September 2017. Fotona rates the MaQX at up to 10 J of Q-switched energy in one structured pulse.

The 585 nm and 650 nm wavelengths are not generated inside the console. They come from optional dye converter handpieces that take the 532 nm beam and shift it, which Fotona now sells as YellowLase QX at 585 nm and RedLase QX at 650 nm. Other handpieces include the titanium R28 with automatic spot detection from 2 to 8 mm, the R29 with spots from 2 to 20 mm, the R58 for the VERDE 532 nm mode, the FS20A, FS20B and FS50B fractional handpieces, and the Leo QX, which has a 2 by 10 mm rectangular pattern.

The FDA device database lists the StarWalker as model M031-3A/2 with a suffix for each version: MAQX, QX, PQX and PICO Pro. The QX is the standard Q-switched model. Fotona's comparison shows the MaQX adding the MaQX-5 and MaQX-10 softness levels, the VERSA3 long pulse mode at 1064 nm and the VERDE mode at 532 nm, which Practical Dermatology described as exclusive to the MaQX. The PQX and PICO Pro are the picosecond versions, so the suffix on the rear label settles which StarWalker you own.

Since two of the four wavelengths depend on separate handpieces, say exactly which dye handpieces come with the system. The StarWalker interface keeps a procedure log and tracks treatment statistics, so a photo of those screens answers a buyer's first question about use. Dealers will also ask about the articulated arm, flashlamp service and each handpiece, and want a photo of the serial label.
