Fotona AvalancheLase

Fotona's AvalancheLase puts two flashlamp pumped solid state lasers in one console: a 755 nm alexandrite and a 1064 nm Nd:YAG. A 520 nm green diode aiming beam is combined with both, and the light travels through an optical fiber to a handpiece or scanner. FDA cleared the AvalancheLase Family under K223540 on January 19, 2023. The 510(k) summary lists spot sizes of 2 to 30 mm for both lasers, up to 500 J/cm2 at 755 nm and 600 J/cm2 at 1064 nm, and repetition rates up to 60 Hz and 80 Hz respectively.

The family comes in three configurations, and the FDA device database gives each its own model number. M071-2F/LX is the alexandrite only unit, M071-2F/XP is the Nd:YAG only unit and M071-2F/LXP carries both lasers. Fotona's brochure lists ACCELERA, VERSA, PIANO and AVALANCHE modes for the LX and FRAC3, VERSA, PIANO and AVALANCHE modes for the XP.

Two accessories carry both wavelengths. The R35X handpiece takes interchangeable optics for spots of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25 and 30 mm. The LX-Runner scanner offers 9 and 11 mm spots over a scan area of up to 64 cm2. Both have Fotona's DMC dry spray cooling, which mists demineralized water from a 0.7 liter container, and a MatrixView sensor that reports skin temperature on the console screen. Do not confuse this console with Fotona's SP Dynamis line, which pairs Nd:YAG with Er:YAG and has no alexandrite source.

Start with the suffix on the rear label, since an LX cannot fire 1064 nm and an XP cannot fire 755 nm. List every optic for the R35X and say whether the scanner is included. Buyers will ask for flashlamp service dates for each laser, fiber condition, the software version and the service record, along with photos of the label and screen.
