Fotona StarWalker MaQX Pro

The StarWalker MaQX Pro is the top model in Fotona's current StarWalker line. Fotona's brochure says the line now comes in two models: the MaQX Pro and the QX, its standard Q-switched unit. Like every StarWalker, it has one flashlamp pumped Nd:YAG cavity that produces 1064 nm, and a KTP crystal doubles that beam to 532 nm. Optional dye handpieces shift 532 nm to 585 nm or 650 nm. FDA cleared the StarWalker family under K171227 in August 2017 and added picosecond modes under K202172 in November 2020.

Fotona lists 16 modalities across the four wavelengths. In nanosecond mode the MaQX pulse can be set to one of four softness levels, MaQX-1, MaQX-2, MaQX-5 or MaQX-10, and the system can deliver up to 10 J in one structured pulse at up to 15 Hz. FRAC3 and ACC are microsecond modes at 1064 nm, VERSA3 is a long pulse 1064 nm mode, and VERDE is a long pulse 532 nm mode. Other listed features include Nd:YAG and KTP spots up to 12.5 mm at high frequencies, the OPTOflex arm with a vacuum cell, dual monitor energy feedback control and a wireless footswitch.

The titanium handpieces have automatic detection of type and spot size. Fotona lists the R28 (2 to 8 mm), the R29 (spots up to 20 mm), the R58 for VERDE, the fractional FS20A, FS20B, FS50 and FS50B, the Leo QX with a 2 by 10 mm pattern, RedLase QX at 650 nm and YellowLase QX at 585 nm. Fractional handpieces accept LIOB spacers. The FDA device database lists StarWalker as model M031-3A/2 with a suffix of QX, MAQX, PQX or PICO Pro and has no separate MaQX Pro entry, so look for the Pro name on the console and screen.

Since 585 and 650 nm depend on dye handpieces, list exactly which ones come with the unit. Buyers will also ask about the arm, flashlamp service, the software version and the service record.
