Sciton BBL, short for BroadBand Light, is a pulsed light system rather than a laser. The FDA cleared the Profile BBL System under K032460 on November 13, 2003, describing broad spectrum output from 500 to 1400 nm and an integral thermoelectric cooler that chills the skin before, during and after a pulse. Sciton's own timeline dates the classic BBL to 2004. The handpiece ran on Sciton's Profile console and later on the JOULE, whose 2011 clearance lists BBL across 300 to 1400 nm.

The BBL uses interchangeable filters to narrow the spectrum for each application. Sciton's JOULE X brochure lists the classic BBL with Smart Filters from 420 to 1400 nm and names its treatment protocols by filter set: Forever Young with 560, 640 and 695 nm plus 590, 695 and 800 ST filters, Forever Clear with 420, 560 and 590 nm and an 800 ST filter, SkinTyte with 590, 695 and 800 ST filters, and Forever Bare across 590 to 695 nm. Sciton added CoolComfort cooling for BBL in 2019.

The classic BBL is often confused with its successors. BBL HERO, launched in 2020, uses a 15 by 45 mm spot, magnetic spot size adapters and filters that change during treatment, and Sciton rates it at four times the speed, three times the peak power and twice the cooling of the earlier BBL. BBL HEROic followed in 2024 with motion tracking and automated pulse placement on the JOULE and mJOULE. A filter set and handpiece without the HERO name point to a classic BBL.

The console matters as much as the handpiece. Tell the buyer whether your BBL runs on a Profile or a JOULE and list the other modules on that console. Lay out every filter so its label can be read, include the adapters, and photograph the handpiece face and cooling surface for chips or scratches. A screen photo, the serial label and service records for the BBL head complete the picture.
