BTL Emsculpt

BTL's original Emsculpt is a high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) system that induces strong muscle contractions through an applicator placed over the treatment area. A 2023 systematic review dates the method's adaptation for body contouring to 2018, and the FDA GUDID record for BTL EMSCULPT was first published in February 2018 under product code NGX, the category for powered muscle stimulators used for muscle conditioning. Unlike the later Emsculpt NEO, the original system has no radiofrequency heating.

The GUDID device identifiers for BTL EMSCULPT share BTL's 799 model prefix with the earlier HPM-6000. FDA cleared the BTL 799-2 in June 2018 (K180813) for improving abdominal tone and for strengthening, toning and firming the buttocks and thighs. Its two outputs let two applicators run at once. The BTL 799-2T, cleared in October 2018, added the arms, and the BTL 799-2L, cleared in July 2019, added the calves. GUDID lists the first applicator, model BTL-299-6, from February 2018 and a Small applicator, BTL-299-7, from July 2019. In March 2020 BTL added an Emsella applicator for the platform, rated up to 2.5 T, for urinary incontinence.

Many sellers are unsure whether they own an Emsculpt or a NEO. Check the applicator labels: original applicators carry BTL-299 numbers, while NEO applicators use 899-AP numbers. GUDID also lists an HPM-6000 console from January 2017 under the same identifier prefix, so a console labeled HPM-6000 belongs to that earlier listing.

When listing an Emsculpt, say how many applicators are included and which type each one is, and whether the console has one or both outputs populated. A pelvic floor applicator, if present, should be listed separately. Photograph each applicator label, the straps, the cables and the console serial label. A buyer will also ask for the software version, any usage figures the system reports and the service history, and will want to know whether the applicators show cracks or worn cable jackets.
