See what it's worth

EVOLVE is a diode laser for hair removal sold in the United Kingdom by Lynton. It is not a Lynton design: the brochure states that the EVOLVE is a Class IIb medical device made by Diagonal Medical Esthetic S.L. of Sabadell, near Barcelona, and Lynton presents it as a product of its partnership with Asirox, the Spanish manufacturer. It is CE marked under the European medical device directive, and its stated intended purpose is permanent hair reduction on all Fitzpatrick phototypes I to VI and treatment of pseudofolliculitis barbae and hirsutism.

The specification table gives a wavelength of 800 to 810 nm, a 10 by 10 mm spot, fluence from 1 to 40 J/cm2 and pulse durations of 10 to 100 ms. It has two operating modes: Standard mode fires single shots at 1 to 4 Hz for targeted work, and Motion mode runs at 5 or 10 Hz while the handpiece is kept moving over larger areas. Lynton's page rates the system at 1200 W. Cooling is by water, and an IceTip system chills the treatment tip to as low as minus 8 degrees Celsius. The unit runs on 90 to 250 volts, stands 1170 mm tall and weighs 28 kg.

Two different machines share the name. InMode's Evolve is an unrelated body contouring platform, so a listing should name Lynton or Asirox and the 810 nm diode to avoid confusion. Within Lynton's range, EVOLVE is the dedicated diode hair removal unit; Lynton's DYNAMIX and LUMINA consoles handle hair removal with IPL or long-pulsed Nd:YAG handpieces instead.

When selling, photograph the device label showing the manufacturer and serial number, the handpiece and tip, and the screen at startup. Report the shot count if the software displays it, the condition of the handpiece window and cable, and the state of the water cooling, including any leaks or alarms. Include the protective eyewear, which the brochure lists as supplied, and records of any service by Lynton.
