ThermiVa is a treatment name and handpiece from Thermi, the Texas company formerly called ThermiGen, rather than a separate console. It runs on the Thermi temperature controlled radiofrequency generator, the unit FDA first cleared in 2013 as the Symphony RF Generator and later renamed ThermiRF. The generator reads tissue temperature through the electrode and adjusts output to hold the set point. For ThermiVa, a dedicated transcutaneous handpiece delivers that energy to external and internal vulvovaginal tissue. A Washington, D.C. practice announced it was offering ThermiVa in August 2015, describing a temperature controlled procedure given as three sessions a month apart.

The clearance matters for anyone buying or selling a ThermiVa setup. In the United States, the Thermi generator and its electrodes are cleared for electrocoagulation and hemostasis in dermatological and general surgical procedures, and the percutaneous electrodes also for creating lesions in nervous tissue. There is no US clearance for a vaginal indication. In July 2018, Thermigen was one of seven companies that received FDA letters about marketing energy based devices for vaginal rejuvenation, and the agency said it had not cleared or approved any device for that use. Thermi's own material states that in Europe its systems carry an indication for electrocoagulation of soft tissue for vulvovaginal laxity, the use ThermiVa is offered for in that market.

Because ThermiVa is a handpiece, the useful question is which generator it attaches to. An older unit is the 20 W ThermiRF or Symphony RF. Thermi's current generator is the ThermiRF+, which adds a 50 W setting and a smart chip that identifies the connected electrode, and the company still lists ThermiVa among its four modalities. Thermi was acquired by Celling Biosciences in 2019.

A buyer will want the generator label, the ThermiVa handpiece with its cable, the grounding pads, the footswitch, any other electrodes in the kit and a record of when the system was last serviced.
