See what it's worth

XTRAC Velocity is a 308 nm excimer laser for targeted UVB phototherapy, sold first by PhotoMedex and, since a June 2015 asset purchase, by STRATA Skin Sciences. PhotoMedex announced FDA 510(k) clearance for the Velocity, model AL 10000, in 2008 for psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis and leukoderma. PhotoMedex positioned it as a faster, higher power successor to the XTRAC Ultra, and STRATA's annual reports call it the third generation XTRAC laser.

FDA's later Momentum summary, K193478, describes the Velocity in detail. A sealed chamber of neon, xenon and hydrogen chloride gas is discharged at high voltage to form xenon chloride, which emits 308 nm light in pulses of about 30 nanoseconds. The Velocity delivers up to 15 mJ per pulse to tissue at up to 400 Hz, limits average power to 6 W, and offers doses from 100 to 4500 mJ/cm2. Light travels through a liquid light guide to a handpiece with removable reusable plastic tips, and exposure is started with a mandatory footswitch.

Identification needs care, because the Velocity and the newer Momentum share model number AL10000. The Velocity is built only in a horizontal layout, uses a footswitch rather than a finger switch on the handpiece, has no onboard patient database and does not support the Multi Micro Dose tip or the Short Hair Scalp Tip. FDA's GUDID lists several AL 10000 version strings under the XTRAC name, so photograph the full label. Older consoles marked Ultra or XL are earlier XTRAC generations.

Before anything else, confirm ownership. In the United States, STRATA has mainly placed XTRAC lasers in physician offices at no upfront charge, retained ownership and been paid per treatment through treatment codes, so many installed Velocity units belong to STRATA. A seller needs records showing the practice bought the laser. Buyers then ask about the service history, the gas chamber and light guide, the tips included and the software version.
