Thermage FLX is Solta Medical's current Thermage system, a monopolar radiofrequency device that heats tissue through the skin while the treatment tip cools the surface by conduction. FDA cleared it under K170758 on September 22, 2017, using the ThermaCool CPT as the predicate. The 510(k) summary describes a console, a handpiece and a disposable treatment tip, operating at 6.78 MHz with a maximum average power of 400 W, with RF tuning across a range of tissue impedances and skin contact monitoring during treatment. Accessories include a return pad, skin marking grid paper, coupling media, cryogen and an optional footswitch.
Each FLX tip is built to deliver a fixed number of pulses, which FDA's device database lists as REPs. The Total Tip comes in 4.0 cm² versions rated for 300, 600 or 900 REPs and in a 3.0 cm² size rated for 400, 600, 900 or 1200. The Eye Tip is 0.25 cm² with 225 or 450 REPs, and the Body Tip is 16.0 cm² with 1200 REPs. Cleared indications include electrocoagulation and hemostasis and noninvasive treatment of wrinkles, including periorbital wrinkles and the eyelids. With skin vibration engaged, the list adds temporary improvement in the appearance of cellulite.
The FLX shares its technology with the CPT before it, and the comparison table in the 510(k) lists only one difference: the FLX has a touch screen where the CPT has a standard LCD. A touch screen console with the FLX name is therefore the main check. FDA's database also lists a Thermage FLX handpiece and a refurbished FLX system and handpiece sold by Solta.
Because tips are consumed by pulse count, a buyer prices the console and handpiece apart from any tips. List sealed tips by size, REP rating and expiry date. Report the handpiece's history, whether the cryogen and vibration work, and whether the system starts without faults. Include photos of the serial label, the touch screen and the handpiece cable connector.
