Apyx Medical Renuvion

Renuvion is the cosmetic surgery brand for the helium plasma technology made by Apyx Medical, the company formerly known as Bovie Medical. The generator sends radiofrequency energy to an electrode in the handpiece, and helium gas flowing over that electrode becomes a plasma that carries the energy to tissue. Apyx sells the same technology as J-Plasma in the hospital surgical market, so J-Plasma is a sibling brand, not another name for this system. Apyx says the technology first received FDA clearance in 2012. A system pairs a generator and handpiece with a helium supply, regulator, grounding pad and optional footswitch.

Several generators have run Renuvion handpieces. The Bovie Ultimate BVX-200H and BVX-200P were cleared in 2017 under K170188. The Apyx Helium Plasma Generator, models APYX-200H, APYX-200P, APYX-JS3 and APYX-RS3, followed in October 2019 under K192867. The Apyx One Console, model APYX-ONE, was cleared under K221830 and had a limited US launch in late 2022 before full release in 2023. It adds a touchscreen, two monopolar ports and a cellular remote service module. Apyx now presents Renuvion as part of its AYON system.

Each Renuvion handpiece is sterile and single use per its 510(k) summary. The APR handpiece comes in 15 cm single port (APYX-15-SP), 15 cm twin port (APYX-15-TP) and 27 cm twin port (APYX-27-TP) versions, cleared for lax neck and submental skin and for coagulating subcutaneous tissue after liposuction. The Dermal handpiece (APYX-044-DERM) is cleared for moderate to severe wrinkles in Fitzpatrick types I to III. The Micro handpiece (APYX-10-Micro) has a 10 cm shaft and works only with the Apyx One Console. Earlier Renuvion/J-Plasma Precise and Precise Open handpieces were cleared for surgical use.

The generator is what a dealer buys, and its model number decides which handpieces it can run, so photograph the model label clearly. List the regulator, footswitch and any unopened handpieces with their part numbers and expiration dates. A buyer will also ask for the software version and the service record.
